The great American librarian John Cotton Dana said, “Who dares teach must never cease to learn.” I cannot precisely remember who implanted the love of learning in me; however, I am certain that my sincere interest in learning is to a certain extent due to the fact that it enables me to teach. If teaching traditionally means standing high and pouring knowledge into learners’ minds, I would not view myself as a teacher, but rather as an awakener. For me teaching is the skill of helping others to discover and I can challengingly state that a good teacher’s effect could be eternal because no one can say for sure where his or her influence stops.
In this paper, I will discuss four things: my philosophy of learning, my philosophy of teaching, my personal goals and the ways of implementing them.
My Philosophy of Learning
My learning philosophy is guided by the Chinese proverb that says, “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” Therefore, for me learning is doing. One of my MA TEFL readings drew my attention to the durability and superiority of procedural memory to declarative memory, which confirmed my belief in and preference to learning “how” rather than learning “what”. Since learning is the food of teaching, I view it as a life-long process that does not only enable me to survive as a teacher but to flourish as a thinking human being.
My Philosophy of Teaching
As an English teacher, I do my best to stick to the following guidelines as they reflect the core of my philosophy of teaching. For me teaching is facilitating knowledge and skills to enable learners to discover by themselves, rather than stuffing their minds with information. So my role is to sow the seeds of autonomy and help them thrive through the water of motivation. My sincere interest in learning and teaching and the use of different teaching methods reflect my motivation and get my learners infected with that same motivation. I use different teaching procedures because students have different learning styles and I also encourage the teachers in my school to do the same. My hope is if one teaching method does not work, others could do the job. Respecting my students, praising them, giving them credit, rewarding them, building their self-confidence, listening attentively to them and responding appropriately are all ways that develop a strong tie between me and my learners allowing me to teach in a constructive atmosphere. I do my best to develop trust and cooperation among the students themselves. This is done through pair and group work. In my teaching I attempt to use every possible resource including realia, things in the class, audio, video, internet and various computer output. Educational games and competitions are key factors for our students in the acquisition of the language. I’m sure that YOUR INSTITUTION has all the facilities and I strongly believe all these facilities will make the learning process easier and more available. I insist on interacting with my learners in English all the time to maximize their exposure to English in a foreign setting such as ours.
To help my teaching continually improve, I always seek feedback from colleagues, students and even myself (reflective teaching). I also encourage other English teachers to do the same to continually improve their teaching.
Stating my philosophy of teaching and forming a clear picture about it is a great help for me as a teacher. Educational institutions succeed because they have a mission and a message to convey, so should individuals. Thus I believe that stating my own philosophy of teaching will help in achieving my goals and lead to my success, God willing. I have always learned that planning makes it easier. I feel proud I took the time to contemplate on my philosophy of teaching and I hope after finishing the practicum, I could detect the progress and change in my teaching.
Statement of Purpose
1) My educational philosophy:
My job, as an instructor, is to create an atmosphere that fosters learning. I am an instructor because I have a passion for guiding students through the learning process, in addition to the passion for the material I present. One of the best ways to foster learning is to demonstrate those feelings to my students. I encourage learning by creating a relaxing environment for students, stimulating interaction about concepts being introduced and organizing the teaching material in a way that makes it much easier to understand.
I treat the subject matter as interconnected, emphasizing that everything students are learning fits together into a holistic understanding of the world, from which they develop their personal worldview. I believe this is the best accomplishment when I am demonstrating general research methodology. I demonstrate that learning how to find information applies to all areas of life and I use topics and examples that are multidisciplinary.
I believe that respect for my students is one of the most important things I can show - not only to encourage their openness to the material I am presenting, but also to inspire them to respect each other and all other humans. I understand that all students have different learning styles. As a teacher, it is my job to discover how each student learns best and integrate those styles into my teaching.
I consider myself the “guide on the side” and allow my students to explore and make their own conclusions. I believe that students learn best by doing, rather than me simply ‘telling’ them to do. The experiences mean more to the students when they’ve made the connections and conclusions on their own; what they have learned is more likely to be retained if they’ve learned it on their own. Besides, I have great experience in working with disabled people suffering from neurosis, mental disorders, panic disorders, depression and stress. Having a second major as psychology I have gone through many hard times trying to find the best way of handling the disabled people and making them want to learn more than others.
2) My learning and teaching strategy:
Teaching strategies should be carefully matched to the teaching objectives of a particular lesson. Active learning allows students to talk and listen, read, write, and reflect as they approach course content through problem-solving exercises, informal small groups, simulations, case studies, role-playing, and other activities -- all of which require students to apply what they are learning. Many studies show that learning is enhanced when students become actively involved in the learning process. Instructional strategies that engage students in the learning process stimulate critical thinking and a greater awareness of other perspectives. Although there are times when lecturing is the most appropriate method for disseminating information, current thinking in college teaching and learning suggests that the use of a variety of instructional strategies can positively enhance student learning.
One of the most important concepts I hope to impart to students is that learning is a process that never ends. For me, the learning process includes improving myself professionally. I want to read more about formal learning theories to expand my understanding of how learning takes place. As I continue to instruct classes, I also aim to enhance my ease and confidence in front of classrooms and audiences. Finally, I plan to experiment with different methods and means of presenting information to classes in order to improve the learning atmosphere I create for students.
3) A) Learning, B) teaching, and C) research -
what is the added value of each to the student, the faculty member, and to the center. Each of these has its own impact on the students and on the university campus in general. They are intergraded and work hand in hand. That’s why we always speak about teaching/learning process. Students take many of their learning habits from the instructor. If the instructor doesn't show interest in the subject and a passion for learning, students are less likely to put forth the effort to learn in that class. An instructor must convince students of his or her knowledge and expertise before they will show a willingness to learn. On the other hand, through teaching students gain knowledge, skills and abilities to use them in their entire life. Research is a part of teaching/learning process. Doing research students come up with new ideas and new achievements. Learning centers are the best environments for teaching, learning and research and in their turn they make the universities the appropriate environments for innovations.
Believe me, professional knowledge, good learning habits and skills, new ideas and innovations are the added values of learning, teaching and research to the students, the faculty members and your center.
4) My Personal mission towards developing students.
My mission as an English teacher is to motivate, inspire, encourage, and support students by providing a safe, secure and loving environment to educate them socially, emotionally, and cognitively so they can continue to build a foundation for life-long learning.
My mission is to create learning environment in which all students can learn to their highest potential. All students can learn and can be successful. I foster respect and responsibility in my classroom, all while having fun!
My students grow and develop in all areas while they are in my classroom: academically, socially, and emotionally. Part of being able to nurture all areas is creating an environment in which all students feel safe to learn, explore, and express their thoughts. In order to create this type of environment, I emphasize respect: respect from me to all my students, respect from my students to me, and respect amongst themselves. The Golden Rule, treat others the way you want to be treated, is my number one rule!
Along with respect, I also emphasize responsibility. I expect my students to be responsible ones. This is something that needs to be taught, modeled, and practiced. Students must be taught to do their best work and do what is expected of them.
It is not a secret that all students have different learning styles.
The social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum.
How students learn is as important as what they learn: Process and content go hand in hand.
The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction.
I strongly believe in the responsive classroom approach and their practices, including morning meeting, logical consequences, and positive teacher language.
5) How would you add value to the discipline, the department, and to center.
I believe that it is important for the lecturer to be involved in her university community. It means that if you work at a university, your job is not only to enter the classroom and run your class. First, I will use my working experience, knowledge, and professional skills to be helpful to the AUK. I do not know much about center so I cannot exactly say in which sphere I can be more useful but one thing I know for sure. I’ll do my best to find ways to add value to the discipline, the department and the center. I will be part of the university. I believe that it is important for staff members to work together for students to be successful. For example, the grammar teacher, and speech/language teacher should all be communicating when working with the same students. The students are much more likely to succeed if all teachers are on the same page and working towards the same goals. However, as a specialist it is my duty to improve the process continually.
I am a good team worker and being a leader or a follower is not essential to me. The outcome of the teamwork is the best reward. In order to add value to the university I can always look back and test new content to see if it converts better, I will make minor changes in strategy to see how the students react, to test new ideas, and consistently come up with new ideas. I will show initiative and help team members during busy periods.
6) Highlight and elaborate on any one theme of the mission statement of center.
For me the most important thing in the process of acquisition of knowledge is to be able to apply it in real life, to benefit from it in personal and professional life, as having only theoretical knowledge without the ability of making it beneficial for you is of no value. I have heard that your center enables its students to build confidence in them, to be creative and apply critical thinking, to gain knowledge not for theory but for practice. Gaining any kind of knowledge students must think how to put it into practice. Each profession requires certain specialized skills, but all professionals also need other, more general skills in order to do their jobs well, benefit from it as much as possible and also be beneficial to the society.
Mission of any reputable Organization/University
Any prestigious learning center around the world aims to create a solid learning environment that facilitates the development of a generation of leaders who are committed to the culture of their community and the global ethical values of professionalism. Our students enjoy a continuous learning process that does not end with obtaining a degree, since the momentum of this process gets accelerated as the learner gathers more experience and commits to more responsibilities. To achieve this, the learner is the focus of the learning process according to a University’s “Learner Centered Approach”. The process of character building and the development of creative and independent critical thinking skills are the core of the educational philosophy at a University. I believe center emphasizes that the acquisition of theoretical knowledge must be accompanied by empowerment of the learner to apply such knowledge to real life situations and benefit from it in both his professional and personal life.
